Foundation Programmes - Your Route to British Universities
The University Foundation Programme (UFP) is a full - time course which offers students an alternative qualification for entry to UK University degree courses. UFP is equivalent to GCE A Levels and international Baccalaureate (IB).
Established in 1989, UFP was the UK’s first Independent foundation programme and it is recognized as one of the leading foundation programmes in the country. We have a wealth of experience in preparing students for entry into the British university system and we have excellent relationships with many UK and international universities. The UFP course allows students entry onto all degree courses except for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science and it is accepted by all UK universities except for Oxford and Cambridge.
Who is UFP for? The majority of UFP students are international students who have finished high school in their own country and whose qualifications are not recognized in Britain. UFP offers such students a faster route into British universities than Levels (which normally take two years), while at the same time broadening their knowledge, developing their study skills, and providing them with a sound academic base for degree-level education.
However we do accept UK students with good GCSE grades or students who have attempted A Levels but did not achieve the grades required to enter the university course of their choice.
We also recommend UFP to students who have stopped at Certificate level on the International Baccalaureate.
Advantages of UFP:
- Takes one academic year instead of the two years required for A-Levels
- Continuous assessment
-
Start September or January to enter university the following September
- Development of research and practical skills relevant to many degree courses
-
Focus on subjects related to future degree course
- Development of study and communication skills
-
Opportunity to acquire and apply IT skills
4 Term University Foundation Course
This course is, primarily, for students who have been studying Intensive English and have reached a suitably high level (at least IELTS 5.00) before the beginning of the September or January University Foundation Courses at Bath Academy and who wish to do some preparation in academic subjects. It is also suitable for those who wish to take the University Foundation Programme at Bath Academy and have been studying English elsewhere and whose level of English is not high enough to start the course immediately.

Euroclass
Euroclass is where a class of students (aged 16-19) from a school (or a group of schools) comes to Bath Academy for an extended period of time (one month, two months, a term, a year) with a teacher to follow their home school curriculum in English. The aim for the students is fourfold. Firstly, it is an opportunity for the students to improve their level of English in the four areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Living, studying and socialising in an English speaking environment will ensure that the students increase their confidence in speaking and listening, perfect their pronunciation, acquire formal and informal vocabulary and knowledge of technical terms for their subjects, and are exposed to various media in English. Secondly, they will be able to gain an appreciation of the use and importance of English as an International Language. Learning in a multi-national, multi-cultural environment enables the students to see why young people from other parts of the world, especially Europe, the Middle and Far East, wish to learn English and progress to British universities. They can also appreciate the problems that some other nationalities have in learning English, learning other subjects in English and adapting to British life.
Thirdly, as the students live in English homes, as part of a family, they will gain an appreciation of English family life, food and customs. Also, adapting to other people, making new friends, managing their own time and money and being independent of their parents will teach important life skills. As Bath is an historic tourist city, they can begin to appreciate English history, architecture, the effect of the Roman occupation on Britain and life in eighteenth century England. Excursions, with prior preparation, will enhance this appreciation. Finally, the students will continue their academic studies by being taught the subjects they are taking back home. In some lessons they will be taught in ‘closed groups’, either by Bath Academy
teachers or their accompanying teacher, whilst in others they will join the International students. They will experience different teaching styles, be helped to become independent learners and be tested on their studies through examinations and coursework assignments. Regular homework and progress tests will also be given and reports and certificates issued at the end of the semester
Bath Academy staff are experienced in teaching international students, will make themselves aware of the home school curriculum and the textbooks to go with it, and will keep in close email contact with the students’ home school teachers to ensure that relevant material is covered. Reports and certificates of attendance are issued at the end of the period. |
